How to Set Up a Pellet Grill: A First-Timer’s Guide
Pellet grills reward a careful first setup — get the basics right and every cook after gets easier.
1. Prime the auger
Before your first cook, run the auger with the lid open until pellets are actively feeding into the firepot. Skipping this step is the most common reason a first cook fails to ignite properly.
2. Season the grill
Run the grill empty at a high temperature (around 400°F) for 30-45 minutes before cooking anything. This burns off manufacturing residue and starts building seasoning on the grates.
3. Start with a simple, forgiving cook
Save the 12-hour brisket for your third or fourth cook. Start with something like chicken thighs or a pork shoulder that tolerates small temperature swings while you learn how your specific grill holds heat.
4. Use the probe, not just the dial
A grill like the Ridgeline Pro includes dual meat probes — use them. Grill-set temperature and actual meat temperature are two different things, and the probe is what tells you when food is actually done.
